"'O Vecchiariell" is a work that reinterprets in a contemporary and minimalist way the figure of San Silverio, patron saint of the island of Ponza.
The title is not accidental: "'O Vecchiariell" is the affectionate nickname with which, for generations, the elders of the island have called their patron saint. A domestic, familiar name, born not from the liturgy but from the voice of the people.
Its origins are lost in time, but a local legend tells of an old sailor from Ponza, surprised by a sudden storm near Le Formiche.
Convinced that he could not return, he prayed with a voice broken by the wind. When all seemed lost, he saw an old figure appear, shining with light, who with a wave of his hand calmed the sea.
"'O Vecchiariell saved me," he would later say - words that have been passed down among the men of the port ever since.
From that moment on, for those who live on the island, San Silverio is not just a saint: he is home. Not only a protector, but a constant presence, a silent confidant, a family refuge in times of need.
This work aims to tell exactly this: not the solemnity of a religious icon, but the intimacy of a popular devotion, alive and sincere.
Through the essential language of form and light, "'O Vecchiariell" restores to the sacred its most human face - the one that lives in the heart of the community, in the echo of words spoken softly, and in the stories that still travel between sea and wind.
